Got Great Big Plants? We Do

Great Big Plants - Organic Fertilizer, Compost TeaLast year we decided we needed to find a “green” fertilizer or organic fertilizer – whatever you want to call it.   We found lots of options, including (but not limited to):

Fish emulsion

Seaweed emulsion

Granule based fertilizer mixtures

Manure

Vermicompost tea

Compost tea

And the list goes on and on…

While looking, we came across what ended up being our final choice.  A product called Great Big Plants (or GBP as we like to call it).  Great Big Plants is a compost concentrate that you add when you watering (mix it into your watering can) – and it gives your plants a nice kick in the backside.

We used it last year, but not consistently – this year we just started with it (we have been busy ok!) and plan to keep it consistent from here on out.  It is so easy to use, I mean you just add it to your watering can (that sounds so old school) and apply it to the base of the plant.  Done.

Then you can sit back, drink a cold one and field questions from your friends when they can’t believe your GREAT BIG PLANTS.  See how I worked that in?  Yeah… I have been working on that for a week.  haha  No, but really a great  product for those that maybe can’t do a compost bin/heap.  This is like having a compost bin… in a bottle.  Trust us.

So if you have a minute, and want to read more about Great Big Plants – here is a link to their website…

Tell them we sent you, or don’t… doesn’t really matter.  They have tons of info to read and several different versions of the compost concentrate – so check ‘em all out.

Our Plants Hate Us, Our Dogs Hate Us – And We Are Sure You Do Too

We’ve been bad blog, dog & plant parents.

We have finally made it through the month of May.  There were a few days in there that I didn’t think we would ever make it.  James went out of town three weekends in a row and I went out of town two.  The other weekends were spent at family functions in other towns 30 or 45 minutes away.  We. Are. Tired.

Our yard and plants have suffered.  Most things are still living they just aren’t doing as well as they could be, but this weekend we are HOME.  In fact there are no out of town trips planned for this whole month and we hope to keep it that way.  There is grass to cut, potatoes to harvest, plants to prune and empty barrels to fill.

At this point I would have to say that the tomatoes in the Aerogarden are looking the best and feeling the least amount of stress.

(Yes, we do realize that the name tag says cilantro.  It’s a liar. LIAR!  We used our own seeds for this and it was the only tag that we had.)

This picture was taken a week ago and these plants have grow a lot since then.  The Aerogarden will never take the place of our garden outside, but we do enjoy trying to grow different things and watching how fast they grow.

We will take some pictures this weekend of the other things going on.  It’s been a tough year to keep things documented but maybe things are slowing down and we will get better.

P.S. – WE ACTUALLY GOT SOME RAIN THIS PAST WEEK!  Real live rain!

Earth Day 2009 w/ Pictures From The Garden

Happy Earth Day everyone!  I hope you take a minute today, walk outside and stretch and let the sun  shine down on you.  Take a minute to notice how beautiful our Earth is… and do something for it for a change.  Instead of the other way around.  Lots of our online gardening friends always say that they wished people would act like they did on Earth Day every single day.  I agree with that, however – it is good that at least for one day everyone is on the same page.

So if you wanted to be super cool, you could make an Earth Day resolution.  Decide on something you are going to do to help make our Earth a better place.  Just a thought.

In celebration of Earth Day – we are just going to post some pictures of our garden and plants.  We kinda feel like this way Earth can speak for itself on Earth Day.  What-cha-think?  Join us if you care to.  Enjoy & HAPPY EARTH DAY!
