Rubbish Dump Spans From the Tip of Hawaii to Tip of Japan – The Independent
If you really needed a reason to at least recycle your water bottles… scientists have found a “plastic soup” of waste caught in strong underwater currents in the Pacific Ocean. This soup stretches 500 nautical miles off California across the Northern Pacific, past Hawaii and almost to Japan… sad stuff. Housing everything from legos to kayaks, this soup migrates like a large animal – belching fragments from time to time and leaving beaches covered in it’s wake.
It is sad to think that most of this comes from land, even though it is said that some does come from ships and off-shore oil rigs. Before you chunk that plastic bottle next time… look around for a recycling center..
